I learned what it’s like to live without a safety net, like the majority of the people on the continent. There are few businesses that exist to facilitate your protection. So if you’re robbed, you don’t generally go to the police. Firstly, because you have to pay them to fill out a report. Secondly, because they wouldn’t do anything about it anyway.A friend of mine’s house was robbed. The burglar used my friend’s rolling lug- gage to pack up the items he wanted to steal. He wasn’t from the area where she lived, so in order to get away, he had to walk a mile or so to catch the bus. The people from her village saw the thief and noticed the pink suitcase with a Peace Corps logo on the side, so began questioning him. The villagers actually ended up accosting the burglar and getting all of my friends items back, down to her eyeliner and curling iron.74
