My aunt had been in touch with many of Grinkers via fax, then I began emailing people before I started my travels. Going to South Africa and meeting the different parts of the family was pretty fascinating. Anthony Grinker was married to a black woman and her father was really radical, so it was very interesting that they ended up together. They really loved each other and were trying to have a baby.He was a politician and the first member of parliament to come out publicly as being HIV positive. He contracted the disease from heterosexual sex. Anthony had been single and then he met his future wife and told her the truth about his health status. He was doing really well on the drugs and decided to come out because he wanted people to understand that they too could live with HIV. Anthony sadly passed away in a car accident after I met him. His father, David Grinker, previously worked for the apartheid government as a functionary of some sort, in the townships. His second marriage was also to a black woman.78
