Friends showed me how to get around. On the island of Zanzibar there are no house numbers, and only a handful of street names, so even when trying to find the phone com- pany, you have to ask five random people on the street to direct you. Internet directo- ries are nonexistent. To pay the electricity bill you take down the meter number, carry it to an M-pesa shop, which is sort of like Western Union, but is basically a man with a Nokia mobile phone circa 1995, behind a wire screen. You pay him and in response get a 11 - digit code that you then input into your home meter, which effectively tops up the amount of remaining charge. In most of Africa, services are not given on credit. So for a cellular phone package, you go into the company’s shop once a month to pay or you have it linked to your bank account.60
