61The Chinese call these women Pow- Pows. They are fifty years old and older, so they are grandmothers. They came up with their own beach style. Everybody designed their own outfit and found the fabric. You can buy these outfits in some stores and on Alibaba, the big chinese shopping website, but most of the really funky outfits are homemade.When you try to interview the Pow-Pows and ask, “Why are you wearing this?”, they start telling you about the sun. When you try to get a deeper answer out of them about fashion or style, they just give you blank faces with no reaction.The Pow-Pows would say to me, “You should wear one too!, everybody is wearing one. Why don’t you wear one?” They all have a story about why they wear the mouthsa, the mask.
