Many of the homes in the village are made out of stone, and the village itself has existed for 150 years. It is very rustic and the toilets are outside. Given the remoteness of the village, it has to be self - sufficient and many homes grow their own vegetables. The working life for men is spent toiling in the fields year round. In the summer months women help pick olives from the groves, and during the cold winter months they maintain their homes and raise children. They also make handcrafted items that they try to sell to tourists who travel to the local small city of Assos. Travelling to the city is difficult, with many women hitchhiking with their wares. Some villagers have never seen the city nearby, let alone the bigger ones like Istanbul or Ankara. Some have been to visit and stay with relatives, but daily life and survival occupies most of their time. The nearest hospital is one hour away and health can be an issue for many of the inhabitants. The closest school is half an hour away and a government initiative sees children driven by bus to it. The village is in close proximity to two others and although they consider themselves Muslims, they do not have a mosque in the town. They have to travel to a neighbouring village to pray. Village decisions are made through a process called Muhtar whereby one person is responsible for most things. Disputes, illness and births and more general decision making falls to this person.21
